This is my favorite time of the year. I love spending time with my extended family. I know a lot of people aren't as lucky as I am. Do you spend a lot of time with your family during the holidays?

I normally spend about the same amount of time as always with my family around the holidays. It's mainly because they all live very close to me. In fact, I don't have any family that lives out of state so it's really easy for all of us to get together throughout the whole year.

My extended family is pretty spread out and there are some people who aren't speaking to each other, so that makes it difficult to have any big family gatherings. I absolutely love the holidays, though, and I don't let it dampen my spirits. My husband, daughter, and I enjoy our quiet celebrations and we have traditions of our own that make this time of year special.

Thanksgiving is our family gathering time. The kids and grandkids come in for the feast and it's so good to see everyone, catch up with everyone and hug on those kids. However, it's good to see them go too. Anyone else understand what I mean here?

When it come to my extended family, I only have one philosophy: Don't visit as often and don't stay as long. I'm sorry to say that the less time we spend together, the better we get along.

My family use to have big gatherings around the holidays, but this has changed due to attrition, relatives passing on, and younger members striking out on their own and moving not only across the country but around the world. All of this, naturally, leads to a gradual weakening of bonds that use to be very strong. Now, my wife and I are lucky to have one or two family members partake in festivities. It's the way of things. Sometimes, we just go off on our own to travel or have a quiet holiday at home alone. We still decorate though, especially at Christmastime.

We spend time with our older kids and my mother during the holidays, which I always enjoy. They all live close to us and we see them often, but the holidays are always special. Sadly, my other family members live several hours away and I only get to see them around once a year and it is usually during the summer.

We are used to gathering twice a year as a family but I think it is normal to have a few elements who will have different views. A few of members of the extended family are not talking to each other too.

I love the holidays for this reason. I love spending time with my cousins and their kids. I'm very close to all of my family but a lot of out of state family comes back home for the holidays.
