AutumnRose created the topic: Weight Loss Surgery

I have been considering having weight loss surgery for a few years now. I am a diabetic, have high cholesterol and could stand to lose at least 50 pounds. However, I am honestly afraid to have surgery because I know of a few people who now have permanent stomach problems because of the surgery. I also do not like the idea of being left with lots of excess skin once I have lost the weight so quickly. Have any of you had weight loss surgery? Do the pros outweigh the cons of this procedure?

Have you consulted your doctor? I'm not an expert, but with your condition it may not be safe to have an operation. I also wonder if you've tried high-intensity exercise and other drugs. This kind of surgery sounds kind of scary for me, honestly.

I have actually seen my doctor, some specialists at a weight loss surgery center and a weight loss surgeon about this. They all think it is a great idea and they say my health will greatly improve. I was pretty enthusiastic about it for awhile, but now I am having second thoughts.

I would never consider weight loss surgery because of the many stories I have heard about the kind of lifestyle change that comes afterwards. Like has been said, I'd advise you to consult your doctor and look at this as a last resort.

My husband was considering this several years ago and spoke with his Dr. about it. His Dr. said that he would be happy to set it up and see him through it, but afterwards he would no longer be his Dr. He said there were too many complications surrounding such surgery and he would not be responsible for the long term outcome. Hence, hubby has not had the surgery and has managed to lose 60 pounds within the last year. I'm so proud of him.

You do know that weight gain is usually a symptom of some other bigger underlying issue, and going straight to the surgery without first trying to resolve whatever is causing you to overeat may be asking for trouble.

This is a question that needs serious consideration, which appears that you have already addressed. I know of no one first hand who has had this surgery, but judging from your past medical history, weight loss is not an option but a necessity. Please get a second, third, even a fourth opinion and also try to exhaust all other weight loss options before you decide to move forward with this. In the end, it is you who must either bear the failure or enjoy the success. Good luck to you, my dear.

I definitely think that if the weight is affecting your health, something certainly needs to be done about it, but I'm not sure if the surgery should be your first option for treatment. However, if you've been over it with your doctor, and this is the best/only option for you, then I would definitely go through with it.

I'm not sure which surgery you were considering, but I know of people who have had gastric lap band surgery, and that seemed to work for them. But again, I don't know which procedure you were considering, or the details of your condition.

I don't think this is one surgery that I could ever have done unless it was a life or death situation. I have two family members and a friend that had this done and, in my opinion, they don't look healthy at all. Their skin is a weird color and they have a lot of problems with eating certain foods now.

I have decided not to have the surgery, for now anyway. I have lost some weight on my own and already see that I have some excess skin that I really do not like. I know I would be horrified to have a lot of it. As for underlying reasons, I have fibromyalgia, spinal stenosis in my neck, herniated discs in my lower back and the chronic pain is so unbearable that I simply do not feel like exercising like I should. I may have to have neck surgery in a few months and if so, perhaps that will relieve some of the pain so I can exercise. It is not a matter of simply overeating because I am emotionally disturbed about something. That is not the case with everyone.
