Does Dogma and Ritual Add Anything?

If you're catholic, you know how constricting some of the rites and rituals of the practice of our faith can be. For instance, I've given up bread and sweets for Lent, not as a part of a necessity, but rather to sacrifice for my Lord, Jesus Christ. Do you feel that these practices bring on a spiritual feeling, or are just antiquated non-entities imposed by a "stony", impersonal church dogma?

I was always told that to each, their own. You can choose to believe in what brings you close to your maker. I am Christian but we've never had to give up any kinds of food during lent. My neighbour never ingests meat during Easter.

I really don't know why people do things like this. Then again, I'm more of a pragmatist who feels that emotions get in the way of logic.

Maybe I should be a Catholic church elder.
